HR Innovation Gives Companies an Advantage

The role of human resources is changing. With so many job recruitment and staffing decisions being done online instead of in person, HR has evolved into the digital space. Tools such as social media and technologies like staff management software and Human Resources Information Systems (HRIS) have placed HR at the forefront of digital advancement.

As the industry continues to evolve, certain elements will rise in importance. HR departments that are aggressive and innovative can be ahead of the curve in these areas, giving their companies a leg up.

Increasing reliance on software

The more tasks that are assigned to an HR department, the more staff is needed to complete them. But with companies trying to keep costs down, extra hiring is not always in the budget. That is where automated HR can play a role, helping a company thrive while keeping hiring to a minimum.

Automatic payroll software can help alleviate some of HR's work, and there are more ways software programs can make up for understaffed departments. Programs that assist with legal and benefits administration, job postings, screenings and hiring can help companies with smaller staffs thrive, Entrepreneur magazine said. The more software a company can provide to assist its HR department, the better that department can focus on the human elements of the job.

With more software helping out, HR employees can pay closer attention to the details of their jobs.

HR growth integrated with technology 

While some worry the reliance on software may eventually replace HR departments completely, experts in the field are adamant that will not  happen. Kathryn Minshew, the CEO of online career platform The Muse, told Fast Company that software can boost the awareness and importance of HR.

"Do I think this wave of technology in the HR recruitment space right now is going to put a lot of HR and recruitment professionals out of their job?" Minshew asked. "Absolutely not. In fact, I think it has the opportunity to be a renaissance of sorts for the space."

Hiring managers agree with that sentiment, as many say their HR staffs will grow in the years to come. In a 2015 Deloitte survey of businesses, 56 percent said they planned to increase their HR staff by either a significant number (5 percent or more) or standard amount in the next 12-18 months, compared to 8 percent who expected a decrease.

Changes in hiring practices

Innovation happens not only with integrating new technology, but also evolving in a way of thinking for a specific part of a job. Within HR, that means changing how new hires are made. 

Why are certain job prospects hired and others turned away? For HR employees, this is an important question. Finding the right person for an open job position is one of the top priorities for HR and a task that takes a lot of effort to get right.

A 2013 Cubiks survey on jobs found that among the top priorities for hiring managers is cultural fit. More than 80 percent of the participants said that how well an employee fits into the workplace is a key factor in their hiring.

In fact, a good cultural fit was seen as a tougher trait to find than a good match from a working perspective. The survey found that 78 percent of respondents agreed with the statement, "It is easier to develop people with a lack of job fit than to develop people with a lack of cultural fit."

Hiring people who fit within the office environment well seems like a good idea, but there are some risks associated with this approach. Hiring based on how a person seems to vibe with others is a type of group think. By adding more people to an office who have similar ideas, everyone gets along, but there are fewer outside perspectives. Selecting people for jobs who are similar to those already employed also can result in a lack of diversity and unique opinions, The New York Times wrote.

HR departments should make the hires that are good for their companies. But that doesn't always mean going with the prospect who is the right cultural fit. Innovating how hires are made by looking outside the box could result in unique thinking and great advantages for a company.
